The International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) describes the role as "a liaison among stakeholders in order to understand the structure, policies, and operations of an organization, and to recommend solutions that enable the organization to achieve its goals."
In layman terms, Business Analyst is a translator in the organization who helps core business people communicate with the IT people. Think about Business group as Spanish speaking group and the IT team as a French speaking group. A Business Analyst speaks both languages fluently and helps the two groups communicate efficiently and help them achieve the organizational goal.
